Are you or your little one struggling with eczema?
Constant redness, dry, rough skin, relentless itching, and even bleeding, eczema can feel never-ending. Watching your poor, helpless baby scratch in frustration with no relief in sight is heartbreaking.
Steroid creams might offer temporary relief, but often, the eczema returns, sometimes worse than before.
Why Topical Treatments Aren’t Enough
Oat baths, zinc oxide, tallow, creams, lotions, potions...
These remedies can help in the short term. They may reduce redness, ease dryness, and offer temporary comfort. But like steroid creams, they don’t address the root cause. The eczema always comes back.
So, why is that?
Because eczema is not just a skin condition, it’s a symptom of something deeper.
The Hidden Problem with Steroid Creams
Steroid creams are often the first line of treatment offered by doctors for eczema. And while they can provide fast, visible relief, especially during severe flare-ups, they come with a hidden cost that many aren’t warned about.
Topical steroids work by suppressing the immune response and reducing inflammation. But the key word here is suppress, they don’t address the root cause of eczema. Instead, they silence the symptoms temporarily.
Steroid Withdrawal Is Real, and It’s Brutal
When you stop using steroid creams after prolonged use, many people experience Topical Steroid Withdrawal (TSW), a condition where the skin flares up worse than ever before, often with burning, weeping, red, inflamed, and painful patches.
Common symptoms of TSW include:
- Intense redness and burning
- Flaking and peeling skin
- Oozing or weeping skin
- Extreme itchiness
- Swelling and sensitivity
- Insomnia and anxiety due to discomfort
Many parents find themselves trapped in a cycle: using stronger and stronger steroids to control flares, only to see the eczema return more aggressively once the cream is stopped.
Why You Deserve a Better Option
The truth is: your body isn't steroid-deficient.
Eczema isn’t caused by a lack of steroid cream, it’s a sign that your body is trying to communicate something deeper. Suppressing symptoms without addressing the root cause only delays healing, and in many cases, worsens it.
By focusing on gut healing and nutrition, you can break free from the steroid cycle and give your body what it truly needs to recover, for good.
Eczema Starts in the Gut
More and more research points to a strong link between eczema and leaky gut.
Leaky gut occurs when the mucosal lining of the small intestine becomes compromised. This allows undigested food particles, toxins, and bacteria to leak into the bloodstream, triggering an immune response.
This chronic inflammation can manifest in various ways, one of the most common being eczema.
Can Eczema Be Healed?
Absolutely. But it requires a shift in perspective:
We must heal from the inside out.
That starts with repairing the gut and giving our cells the fuel they need to function and regenerate properly.
Step One: Eliminate Common Triggers
To begin healing, remove the most common inflammatory and gut-damaging foods:
- Processed foods
- Refined sugars
- Grains (especially wheat, corn, and soy)
- Seed oils (canola, sunflower, soybean, etc.)
Why these?
Because grains, corn, and soy are among the most heavily sprayed crops with glyphosate and other synthetic pesticides. Even organic versions can still contain residues. These substances can further damage the gut lining and contribute to flare-ups.
Ensuring that you’re drinking spring water or properly filtered water can also help reduce exposure to potential triggers.
Healing the gut takes time and consistency. But the results are worth it.
What Can You Eat?
You might be thinking:
“What’s left to eat if all the supermarket shelves are full of these ingredients?”
That’s where animal-based eating comes in.
What Is Animal-Based Eating?
We’ve created four free guides to help you get started, one of which is specifically designed for families with young children. You can download these under our "Free Wellness Resources" section.
In short, an animal-based diet emphasizes:
- 100% grass-fed animal fats and proteins
- Raw dairy (if tolerated)
- Raw honey
- Spray-free fruit
Our family has been eating this way for nearly two years, and we are thriving.
We’ll never go back to a “regular” diet.
Fat Is Key
Every organ and hormone within your body needs fat to thrive, including your gut.
The key to healing the mucosal lining is prioritising high-quality, grass-fed animal fats.
The best sources?
- Bone broth
- Grass-fed butter
- Fatty cuts of grass-fed red meat
This is the fastest and most sustainable way to see results when suffering from eczema, autoimmune conditions, or chronic inflammation.
Our Personal Healing Journey
This lifestyle shift has changed everything for us:
- My eczema-prone husband and toddler have had no flare-ups since making the switch.
- I personally healed from multiple chronic illnesses by focusing on nourishing, gut-healing foods.
Yes, it may seem extreme to some, but when you start feeling vibrant, clear, and symptom-free, you won’t want to go back either.
What You Put on Your Skin Matters
Although eczema starts in the gut, external factors can also contribute to flare-ups and increase redness, dryness, itchiness, and sensitivity.
Your skin is your largest organ, and anything that touches it can make its way into your bloodstream.
Water Quality
A huge consideration when dealing with eczema, especially in babies and toddlers, is the water you're bathing and showering in.
This is of course entirely dependent on where you live in the world, but most water supplies contain harsh chemicals and neurotoxins such as fluoride and chlorine. These can be drying, irritating, and harmful not just to the skin, but to your health overall.
If spring water isn’t an option, the next best step is to install a high-quality shower or bath filter. Make sure the brand is transparent about what it filters and confirm that it removes fluoride and chlorine.
Skincare and Household Products
Anything that comes into contact with your skin daily needs to be considered. Try to avoid ingredients such as:
- Synthetic fragrances
- Parabens
- Formaldehyde releasers
- Alcohols
- Actives like retinol, salicylic acid, and lactic acid
- Chemical filters (e.g., oxybenzone found in sunscreens)
While essential oils aren’t inherently harmful, it’s best to avoid them during active eczema flares, they’re potent and can increase irritation.
Simple is always better. That’s why grass-fed tallow is such a great option.
Tallow for Temporary Relief
While your body is healing from within, grass-fed beef tallow can offer natural, topical relief.
Tallow is bioidentical to the sebum your skin produces, making it ideal for soothing eczema-prone skin. It's naturally rich in vitamins A, D, E, and K, and deeply nourishing.
The Role of Stress and Sleep in Healing
While food and environmental factors are essential, don’t overlook the impact of stress and sleep.
Chronic stress raises cortisol levels, disrupts digestion, and weakens the immune system — all of which can worsen eczema symptoms. Poor sleep, especially in children, can slow down healing and lead to more frequent flare-ups.
Tips to support rest and regulation:
- Prioritise consistent, calming bedtime routines
- Reduce screen time (especially before sleep)
- Practice mindfulness, light stretching, or breathwork
- Spend time outdoors daily
- Minimise unnecessary obligations during flare-ups
Healing isn’t just about what you eat, it’s about how safe and supported your body feels.
Healing Isn’t Linear, And That’s Okay
It’s important to understand that healing isn’t always a straight line.
You may experience ups and downs. Flare-ups may still happen. You might even notice “detox” reactions when removing processed foods or introducing new ones.
This is normal.
Stay consistent. Your body is doing the work. Every day you commit to healing is a step closer to freedom from eczema.
Don’t Forget the Sun
Sunlight is also essential to healing.
Natural sun exposure helps regulate the immune system, reduce inflammation, and support vitamin D production, another key player in skin and gut health.
Aim for at least 10–20 minutes of unfiltered sunlight on bare skin daily, if possible.
In Summary
Eczema is a sign that something deeper needs attention.
You can treat the symptoms endlessly, or you can begin the journey of true healing by addressing the root cause, your gut.
Healing takes time, intention, and consistency. But it is absolutely possible.
